“Ignore basic health guidelines and dig your own graves”
If people don’t follow all of the basic health guidelines to prevent Covid-19 all the time, it will be digging our own graves. A Covid-19 cluster does not appear the next day or days after one or more protests. We have noticed that Covid-19 does not spread again until the disease reaches the elderly and sick with low immunity and they fall ill. By that time, fully vaccinated asymptomatic protesters had already spread the disease, Deputy Director General of Health Services Dr Hemantha Herath said.
He told a press briefing at the Colombo Health Promotion Office on Wednesday that it was the protesters’ responsibility to protect themselves and the people of the country against Covid-19. It is a crime to put people in danger. Antigen tests turn positive after a few days of infection and not the next day or two. Union leaders should not be irresponsible and ignorant in putting the lives of their members and the people of the country at risk by organizing protests.
Dr Hearth said the people of Sri Lanka had already learned adequate lessons from Covid-19 and repeating the same offense over and over again could not be accepted under any circumstances. If we push the country to where we were before two months, we will have to see our loved ones die again.
He said following all basic health guidelines is a must for everyone at all times to prevent another outbreak of Covid-19 in Sri Lanka. Wearing a standard mask all the time, standing more than three feet away from another person, washing your hands often with soap and water, or using standard hand sanitizer are basic health guidelines.
