Evaluate health protocols during Papua PON needed: house spokesperson
Jakarta (ANTARA) – House of Representatives (DPR) Speaker Puan Maharani called for an assessment of the health protocols implemented during the XX Papua National Games (PON) for mutual security reasons after that several athletes and officials have tested positive for COVID-19.
“An assessment needs to be carried out on the sanitary protocols of the Papua PON. We do not want to risk the safety of people,” Maharani said Wednesday.
This case concerns a report in which 29 athletes, officials and PON committees were exposed to COVID-19. The 29 people are spread across four PON clusters: Jayapura Town, Jayapura District, Mimika District and Jayapura District.
Maharani then urged organizers to immediately isolate PON participants indicated as positive for COVID-19. She also recalled the importance of accurate monitoring and sterilization of sites to stem the transmission of the virus.
“Do not let this national event bring problems to the community, especially the people of Papua, as a host,” she said.
She urged organizers and relevant stakeholders to immediately investigate the reason for this increase in the number of COVID-19 cases among PON participants. She urged all parties to work together to find a solution to avoid an increase in the number of PON participants exposed to COVID-19.
The speaker from the house also highlighted the inadequate implementation of health protocols at PON sites. According to reports, inspections and supervision during games were often far from optimal.

“The implementation of health protocols during the opening ceremony a few days ago was pretty good. It should be applied at every venue during the national games to ensure the safety of all, ”she said.
The organizing committee should also systematically check the vaccination certificates of spectators coming to each PON match. The requirement of a maximum audience capacity of 25 percent had to be met, Maharani stressed.
The match committee should always keep an eye on spectators, especially when they start to crowd or remove their masks, she said.
“The organizers, as well as the COVID-19 Handling Task Force, must implement health protocols,” she stressed.
On the other hand, she reminded athletes and officials to remain vigilant and always implement health protocols and avoid unnecessary interactions during the match, especially when removing their masks.
However, Maharani noted that the COVID-19 cases should not dampen the spirit of Papua PON. She also expressed optimism that more cases would not surface at the quadrennial sporting event.
“Let’s work together to keep the Papua PON well organized. Keep morale up, be optimistic and always implement health protocols,” she noted.
Maharani said he reminded all stakeholders that the key to the success of XX Papua PON is discipline in the implementation of health protocols.
The success of XX Papua PON is important to prove that Indonesia is able to properly host the first nationwide event during the COVID-19 pandemic, she said.
