on the Internet is quick and easy. But how do you know if the information is:

Correct or misleading?

Based on solid medical evidence or just an opinion?

Offer factual data or simply promote a product that someone wants you to buy?

The Internet makes it easier and faster to find health information. Much of the information on the Internet is valuable; However, the Internet also enables the rapid and widespread dissemination of false and misleading information. You should carefully review the source of information you find on the Internet and discuss this information with your health care provider. This fact sheet can help you determine whether the health information you find on the Internet or receive by email, text or social media is likely to be reliable.

  1. Who manages the site? Online resources such as websites and social media should make it easy for you to find out who is responsible for the site and its information. Web address or copyright information should be listed on each page, along with a link to the site’s home page.
  2. Who pays for the site? Running websites and social media costs money. The source of funding for a website should be clearly stated or easily apparent. For example, the US government funds websites with addresses ending in “.gov”, educational institutions maintain “.edu” sites, non-commercial organization addresses often use “.org” and “. com” means a commercial organization. A site’s funding source can affect what content it presents, how it presents that content, and what the owner wants to accomplish on the site.
  3. What is the purpose of the site? The person or organization that runs a website and the sources of funding for the site determine the purpose of the site. Many websites have a link to information about the site, often called “About this site”. This webpage should clearly state the purpose of the site and help you evaluate the reliability of the site’s information. Seeking another source of independent, unbiased health information can help you validate the accuracy of material presented on a site.
  4. What is the original source of the site information? Many medical and health websites publish information that the owner has collected from other websites or sources. If the person or organization in charge of the site did not write the material, they should clearly identify the original source. For social media sites, it is also important to determine if the source of the information is reliable, i.e. what is the background and expertise of the person posting the content?
  5. How does the site document the evidence supporting its information? Websites must identify the medical and scientific evidence that supports the material presented on the site. Medical facts and figures should have references (such as citations from articles published in medical journals). Also, opinions or advice should be clearly distinguished from “evidence-based” information (i.e. based on research results). Testimonials from people who say they have tried a particular product or service are not evidence-based and generally cannot be substantiated.
  6. Who reviewed the information before the owner posted it on the site? Health-related websites should provide medical reference information for individuals who prepared or reviewed material on the website.
  7. How current is the information on the site? The Experts should regularly review and update the material on the Websites. Medical information should be up-to-date because medical research constantly provides new information about medical conditions and how best to treat or prevent them. Sites should clearly display the most recent update or revision date. Even if the information has not changed for a long time, the site owner should indicate that someone has recently reviewed it to make sure the information is still valid.
  8. How does the site owner choose links to other sites? Trustworthy website owners usually have a policy governing the links to other sites they post. Some medical websites take a conservative approach and provide no links to other sites. some sites provide links to any site that requests or pays for a link; and others provide links only to sites that meet certain criteria. Checking a website’s linking policy can help you understand how it chooses links to other sites and what it is trying to accomplish by posting those links.
  9. What user information does the site collect, and why? Websites regularly track how far users have traveled through their sites to determine which pages people visit. However, many health-related websites also require users to “subscribe” or “become a member” of the site. Sites sometimes do this to collect user fees or select information relevant to the user. Subscription or membership may allow the website owner to collect personal information about the user.

Any website or social media site asking you for personal information must explain exactly what the site will and will not do with the information. Many commercial sites sell “aggregate” data, such as the percentage of their users who take dietary supplements, about their users to other companies. In some cases, the sites collect and reuse “personally identifiable” information, such as your zip code, gender, and date of birth. Make sure you read and understand any privacy policy or similar language on the site and don’t sign up for anything you don’t fully understand.

  1. How does the site manage interactions with users? Websites and social media sites should always provide users with a way to contact the site owner with any issues, comments, and questions. If the site hosts a chat room or other form of online discussion, it should explain the terms of use of the service. For example, the site should explain whether anyone is moderating discussions and, if so, who moderates and what criteria the moderator uses to determine which comments to accept and which to reject. Always read online discussions before participating to make sure you are comfortable with the discussion and what participants are saying to each other.
  2. How can you verify the accuracy of the information you receive by e-mail or SMS? Carefully evaluate any emails or text messages you receive that provide health-related information. Consider the origin and purpose of the message. Some companies or organizations use emails or text messages to advertise products or attract people to their websites. A critical eye is warranted if a person or business promotes a particular medical product or service in an email or text message without providing supporting medical evidence.

Since the start of the pandemic, more and more people are talking about mental health. A growing number of us are beginning to see it for what it is: an important part of your overall health and well-being, just like your physical health. But mental health issues, resources, and conversations can still feel complicated and out of reach.

Having a broad understanding of the topic can help you be better informed if you or someone you know is suffering from a mental health issue or crisis. About half of people in the United States will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives, so everyone should know what to watch out for.

There is often no single cause for a mental health problem. Instead, there are many possible risk factors that can influence the likelihood of someone suffering from a mental health problem or the severity of symptoms.

Some risk factors for mental health problems include: trauma, which can be a one-off or ongoing event; your environment and its impact on your health and quality of life; genetic; brain chemistry; and your habits and lifestyle, such as lack of sleep.

Of course, understanding the risk factors for a mental health problem can be more difficult when it comes to your own mental health. Take time to question your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to see if it’s part of a pattern that may be caused by a mental health issue. Did things that seemed easy start to seem difficult to you? Does the idea of doing everyday chores like making your bed now seem really, really difficult? Have you lost interest in activities and hobbies you used to enjoy?

If you are concerned about your mental health, you have several options. You are not alone – help is there and healing is possible. Connecting with Foundation 2 Crisis Services is a great place to start and one of many supports in our community who want to help you thrive. Our crisis counselors are available 24/7 at 319-362-2174 to talk. All calls are free and confidential.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Mental Health America is offering a great resource called “Back to Basics” with ideas and solutions to help you have productive conversations about mental health. While you may not need this information today, knowing the basics of mental health means you’re prepared if you ever need it.

Emily Blomme is CEO of Foundation 2 Crisis Services, a Cedar Rapids-based nonprofit that focuses on suicide prevention, crisis response, and mental health support. Foundation 2 serves all Iowans and responds to more than 5,000 contacts per month (phone, text, and chat). During May Mental Health Awareness Month, we would like the opportunity to share practical tips for assessing mental well-being and remind people that Foundation 2 services are available and free to all.

Founded in 2018 by six of South Africa’s leading hospital groups and medical scheme administrators, CareConnect Health Information Exchange (HIE) is designed to help make a meaningful difference in healthcare outcomes. It is built on the advanced InterSystems HealthShare interoperability platform used by healthcare organizations worldwide to facilitate the efficient, safe and reliable sharing of patient information.

But why is such an exchange so important?

Healthcare providers around the world are struggling to balance spiraling costs with delivering consistent, high-quality patient outcomes. Fortunately, the growing adoption of technological solutions in the sector has seen the development of health information exchange in the United States, throughout Europe and now, with CareConnect, in Africa.

At the heart of these exchanges is the concept of unified care. This allows providers to securely integrate patient care records with patient indexes while protecting personal data. By doing so, the sector can gather data to provide analytics and improve a country’s healthcare environment. One need only look to the United States, arguably the most mature HIE market in the world, for vital information on CareConnect’s trajectory in South Africa.

Targeted debuts

Healthcare stakeholders want to be part of an HIE, but tend to see things from their perspective when it comes to data ownership. As more players begin to get involved, a tipping point occurs when data begins to live in the exchange to create a strategic asset that all can use.

Of course, the huge amount of data sources in healthcare adds complexity, especially when it comes to trying to unify everything. Using advanced technologies like the InterSystems HealthShare platform, this integration is a springboard to strategic value creation. The COVID-19 pandemic has been a clear use case for the benefits of hospitals, clinics, and other service providers having access to a centralized data resource containing patient information. But there are others. Just consider the positive impact an HIE can have on the delivery of care in the event of a natural disaster like a flood.

Although still in its infancy, CareConnect can serve as a catalyst to support innovative programs that improve healthcare in public and private spaces. An additional added value of an HIE is that it can start small but grow quickly to offer a unified care program.

Privacy

Comprised of two modules, HealthShare Unified Care Record and HealthShare Patient Index, the InterSystems platform brings together the information that matters. It connects providers, patients, and payers through a unified care record that provides comprehensive analytics across the entire healthcare value chain.

Before one can even consider deploying an HIE, one needs to tackle the elephant in the room – complying with global and national privacy and data security standards and certifications. The InterSystems platform is standard by design. It provides integration and interoperability of health apps and data with a commitment to privacy and consent standards such as HIPPA (US), GDPR (Europe and UK) and POPIA (South Africa) ), while also using FHIR, HL7, IHE and other global healthcare information protocols and messaging formats. This means that patient data is always protected.

Relevant information

Only when a health system’s data is aligned can it perform analytics to inform stronger decision-making. CareConnect creates the impetus to do so in SA. Traditionally, healthcare systems have faced significant issues with latency and data duplication. Yes, companies have invested in everything from data warehouses to dashboards and predictive models, but as these tools are limited by scalability, integration and workflow challenges, clinical data, claims and others remain closed.

The ability to see, in real time, a patient’s history and care regimen, regardless of the service provider used, might therefore sound like science fiction. And yet, that’s exactly what an HIE like CareConnect will do, resulting in better decision-making and lower costs while improving patient care. Imagine the possibilities for clinical departments across the country. The interoperable environment provided by CareConnect and InterSystems allows specialists to identify previously hidden correlations leading to better patient outcomes.

patient centered

In all of this, the patient must remain at the forefront. The HIE lives and dies by its effectiveness in bridging the data integration gap with analysis that brings relevant insights that can save lives, improve care and keep costs as affordable as possible.

Using an HIE to identify at-risk patients using an interoperable platform ensures that clinical data can be gathered from any number of sources. For example, a provider can discover a diabetic patient who is late for an eye exam, which facilitates early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy, which can lead to blindness. Think of the hub as connecting all data in partnership with healthcare organizations to develop insights that can be broadly applied to all patients in the ecosystem. This means that a process that started with one patient can provide patient-focused information that can apply to everyone using health care in the country.

CareConnect is the future of quality healthcare. The journey has begun, and we are thrilled to be part of it.

Since the start of the pandemic, more and more people are talking about mental health. More and more of us are beginning to see it for what it is: an important part of our overall health and well-being, just like our physical health. But mental health issues, resources, and conversations can still feel complicated and out of reach.

Are there common warning signs for mental health issues or seizures? Specific factors that can lead to mental health issues or even seizures? What resources are available — and how do I know if they’re right for me?

Many of us are new to mental health topics. Having a better understanding of mental health and wellbeing can be helpful if we or someone we know is experiencing a mental health issue or crisis.

About half of people in the United States will meet the criteria for a diagnosable mental health condition at some point in their lives, so everyone should know what to look for and where to find help.

There is often no single cause for a mental health problem. Instead, there are many possible risk factors that can influence the likelihood of someone suffering from a mental health problem or the severity of symptoms.

Some risk factors for mental health problems include: trauma, which can be a one-off or ongoing event; your environment and its impact on your health and quality of life (also called social determinants of health, such as financial stability and access to health care); genetic; brain chemistry; and your habits and lifestyle, such as lack of sleep.

Of course, understanding the risk factors for a mental health problem can be more difficult when it comes to your own mental health. Take time to question your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors to see if it’s part of a pattern that may be caused by a mental health issue. To start, ask yourself:

  • Did things that seemed easy start to seem difficult to you?
  • Does the idea of doing everyday chores like making your bed now seem really, really difficult?
  • Have you lost interest in activities and hobbies you used to enjoy?
  • Do you feel resentful, perhaps to the point of lashing out at people you care about?

One of the quickest and easiest ways to find out if you have symptoms of a mental health problem is to get a mental health exam. There are online assessments, where screening is an anonymous, free, and private way to learn more about your mental health and see if you have warning signs of a mental disorder or illness.

There are many screening tools online. You can start with one of these websites: Mental Health America (www.mhascreening.org), Region 3 Innovations in Behavioral Health website (www.region3.ne.networkofcare.org), or Bryan Health (https://screening.mentalhealthscreening.org/bryanhealth). Additionally, many colleges and universities have online screening tools for their students.

Most screenings only take a few minutes. And, once you’re done, you’ll receive information on next steps based on the results. A screening is not a diagnosis, but it can be a useful way to start a conversation with your doctor or a loved one about your mental health. We encourage you to consider talking to someone you trust about your results, and also to seek out a professional to find the support you need.

Whether we realize it or not, mental health plays an important role in our overall well-being. When we are mentally healthy, we are able to enjoy our life and the people in it, we feel good about ourselves, we have good relationships, and we handle stress better. It’s normal for our mental health to change over time – we all face difficult situations in our lives.

Creating positive habits is a great way to support your mental health. This is true when you are doing well, and it also helps you learn skills to use if you are experiencing symptoms of a mental health issue. Three important habits that people can work on that will impact their mental health are healthy food choices and nutrition, exercise, and sleep.

Websites like Mental Health America (www.mhanational.org) share practical mental health information to help us start learning the basics of mental health and wellness. There are also local resources, including your local public health department, Region 3 Behavioral Health Services, Lanning Center, and our many community mental health providers working in schools and colleges, hospitals, and clinics. , as well as in private practices in the health district.

While you may not need this information today, knowing the basics of mental health means you are prepared if you ever need it, or when you might need it to support others. in trouble.

Young people in Kenya can now access information about their sexual and reproductive health after the Ministry of Health launched a platform designed to provide them with information easily and credibly.

The platform, called Lifeyangu.comwas inaugurated today by Dr. George Rae is the Acting CEC for Health, Kisumu County, in collaboration with a consortium of local and international organizations led by Deutsche Stiftung Welbevölkerung (DSW) and Bayer East Africa.

Life Yangu will provide information to Kenyans aged 18-24, enabling them to easily access sexual and reproductive health services by mapping nearby health facilities and providing a safe environment for young people to share information. So far, 106 public clinics have been assigned to the first phase of the project.

The idea for the platform grew out of the challenge of accessing credible reproductive health specialists and information online in Kenya and the growing need to provide young people with this knowledge. Some key information young people can now access are nearby reproductive health facilities and contraceptive options, among others.

Speaking at the launch, Dr. George Rae is the Acting CEC for Kisumu County Health, said the ministry was pleased to have this public-private partnership, bringing together like-minded organizations to come up with effective solutions that change the lives of Kenyans.

“It is impressive that this platform, Lifeyangu.com, developed by DSW and Bayer, has come at the right time, where all of these factors – the need for appropriate reproductive health services and access to technology – intersect” , said Dr. Rae.

“We are in the digital age and as such there is a need to ensure that young people can access online tools to move their lives forward. The government has put in place a series of measures to create an enabling environment for innovation which will have a positive impact on all Kenyans, including the youth. In 2019, at the International Conference on Population and Development, Nairobi Summit, HE President Uhuru Kenyatta pledged to use innovation, communication and technology to ensure adolescents and young people reach the standards highest levels of health,” added Dr. Rae.

On her part, Evelyn Samba, Country Director of DSW Kenya, confirmed that one of the reasons they chose to go the online route was that young Kenyans are much more comfortable searching for information online. line than to go to physical facilities.

“It is in this context that we wanted a digital solution that was simple, accessible and easy to find; a platform that aims to reduce pressure points for young people when seeking information about their reproductive health and a space where they find accurate and appropriate information and where their questions and concerns are kept private – and will not be exposed stigma and suspicion by peers and parents/guardians,” said MS Samba.

As businesses, government agencies and nonprofits reopen and employees return to in-person offices, many pandemic safety measures are being modified. If your business has checked the vaccination status of its employees or customers or collected other COVID-related information, have you thought about what to do with the data now? Companies that maintain this information or have developed apps or other products to facilitate its collection can convey an important indicator to others considering entering the growing health app market: health information. sensitive must be accompanied by a label “Caution: handle with care”.

Does your company develop vaccine verification apps?
Some vaccine verification “passport” apps store a digital copy of a person’s vaccination card. Others give the user a digital recording to save to other apps or a mobile wallet. In addition to a person’s vaccination status and possibly their test results, some apps collect other information to verify the person’s identity, such as their name, date of birth, zip code, email address, etc. email and phone number. Some apps even leverage state or pharmacy immunization records. Once verified, apps can keep data on the phone, others can access cloud data, and still others can create a digital ID (often a QR code) that other apps can scan. If your company is building vaccine verification apps or developing other health-related apps, here are some key considerations.

  • Make accurate representations. Be clear about how people’s information will be used and shared, and then deliver on those promises. If your company has deployed apps to read credentials in storefronts, make sure those companies understand your practices and the limits on how they can use the data you share.
  • Keep your app up to date and your customers informed. If your app needs to be updated to protect against new security vulnerabilities, track it and do it. And if a customer needs to update saved information to continue using your app, communicate this clearly.
  • Review and update your privacy claims. Companies are creating apps that can evolve over time to share new or different information, especially around developments in public health. If your privacy statements don’t keep pace with changes to your data practices, consumers could be misled.
  • Minimize shared data. When verifying a consumer’s vaccination status, it may be sufficient to communicate their status to another entity without sharing name, date of birth, email address, type of vaccine, etc. of the person. This principle also applies to other health-related applications.
  • Protect the data you use for verification. If your application transmits sensitive data to verify someone’s status, use transit encryption. People who use these apps (or other health apps) usually rely on open Wi-Fi hotspots in cafes, airports, and other places where it’s easy for information thieves to intercept data. If your app stores information on a phone, consider protecting or hiding the data. This helps protect users in the event of a (digital-type) virus, malware, or device loss.
  • Apply the lessons of the pandemic by developing new health-related apps. Health apps are here to stay. But before your company rushes to market with a new product, train your team to prioritize best practices for secure development. If you start with security – and keep it as task #1 while you design, develop and test – you can reduce the risk of deploying a product with a fatal flaw. Another great resource: NIST’s Secure Software Development Framework (SSDF). Before your product goes live, check that it works as advertised and that security measures are in place. An essential step: test your product to ensure that it is not susceptible to common security vulnerabilities.
  • If you process health data or children’s data, understand the applicable standards and regulations. Additional legal provisions may apply where health information and children’s information are involved. Seek guidance on the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act and the COPPA Rule, the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), the Health Breach Notification Rule, and other relevant laws.

Does your business, nonprofit, or other group check people’s immunization status?
If your business checks the vaccination status of employees, customers or others – whether that’s using an app, checking vaccination cards in person, getting card scans via email, etc. – here are some tips to keep in mind. These principles will remain relevant as new health applications enter the market.

  • Consider your goal. When you check the status of customers or employees, do you do it to make sure they are vaccinated or do you need more information to comply with legal obligations or possibly conduct contact tracing? Identifying your goal can be an important step in determining the best way to achieve it.
  • When checking a person’s vaccination status, less is usually more. Ask yourself if you can simply confirm that a person is vaccinated by looking at their vaccination card or a digital ID. If you don’t need more detailed information, don’t ask for it and collect it in the first place. You don’t have to protect data you never had
  • Research the market. If you decide to use an app or other technology to help you check immunization status or perform other health-related functions, exercise great care when selecting service providers. Investigate companies, learn more about their software, and ask questions about their privacy and data. security practices. What information will they share with you? What information will an application collect from you, your customers or your employees? Are the representations you make to others consistent with your service provider’s practices?
  • Provide a secure environment. If you use technology to collect personal information, do you have a secure network through which the information is transmitted? And if you need to retain information, can you store it securely?
  • If you need to keep information about a person’s vaccination status, consider how long you need to keep it. Once you no longer have a legitimate need for someone’s vaccination status or other health information, dispose of it safely.
  • Use the return to in-person work – or the transition to a more permanent remote office – as an opportunity to take stock of the data you collect and maintain. If you don’t permanently need a consumer’s date of birth to verify their status, don’t store it. Or if you’re using an app in a storefront to check the immunization status of customers, think critically about how long to store data related to a customer visit. But don’t stop there. Look beyond COVID-related circumstances to take a fresh look at your information collection and retention practices. Why collect or store data you don’t need?
