Caregivers’ perceptions of the importance of COVID-19 preventive health guidelines and difficulty following guidelines are associated with children’s adherence rates

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE: To describe children’s adherence to four preventive health guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic and to study the correlates of adherence at the caregiver level.

METHOD: Two hundred and thirty-six caregivers (75% women) of children aged 6 to 12 (Mage = 8 years; 53% of men living in the United States assessed children’s adherence to four preventive health guidelines between 10/16/2020 and 11/14/2020. Caregivers also assessed the perceived importance of each directive in limiting the spread of the virus and the perceived difficulty in achieving compliance from children.

RESULTS: Child adherence was highest for mask wear (median [Mdn] = 96%) and hand hygiene (Mdn = 95%). Compliance with social distancing guidelines was lower. Mdn’s respect for social distancing with family outside the household was 80%, and Mdn’s respect for social distancing with friends was 72%. Additionally, for each of the four guidelines, less than half of the sample reported 100% adherence (range = 20% to 43%). Adherence was positively associated with caregivers’ perceptions of the importance of a given behavior in limiting the spread of the virus (rs = 0.38-0.62) and negatively associated with the perceived difficulty in obtaining the child’s adhesion (rs = -.37-.25).

DISCUSSION: Current results indicate that parents perceive children’s adherence to social distancing to be more difficult than children’s adherence to mask wear or hand hygiene. Lower perceptions of the importance of caregiver behavior and greater perceived difficulty in achieving child compliance were associated with lower compliance with all tasks. Brief, targeted interventions (e.g. motivational interviews, parenting behavior management training) may be well suited to improve caregivers’ perceptions of the value of behavior, while addressing behavioral issues that interfere with adherence. of the child.
